Steve
believes that the key to a good Director is not only
bags of creativity but excellent planning and organisational
skills, it is all about effective time and people
management. Whatever the shoot, time is money and
budgets are always limited. For the Director, this
means making every second count and getting the most
out of everything on the day, from actors and crew
to the actual location you are shooting in.
For Steve, this means obtaining or making accurate
plans of the location he is filming in and planning
every last shot in a shooting script. He’s also
been known to use his computer at home and build basic
virtual sets so he can play with camera angles and
shots for all the scenes. The result is on the day
of the shoot, not a second is wasted.
All this planning means he always comes well armed
to his shooting days with the necessary documentation
to assist the crew and cast in doing their jobs. It’s
this attention to detail and careful planning that
ensures Steve gets the job done on the day while still
giving him the flexibility to react to changes if
they are required or a new idea pops up.
With the mechanics of the shoot
all prepared, this allows Steve to concentrate
on the primary job of the Director, which is
getting the most from the actors or performers
while still giving himself and them time to
enjoy the day. For himself he says "I love
every minute of a shooting day, from the first
‘Action’, to the last ‘Cut’,
it makes all the weeks of planning worthwhile."
